Radioactivity levels high in Japan

Posted by Shazy on Saturday, March 26, 2011

Radioactivity levels high in Japan
Radioactivity levels high in the sea off Japan nuclear plant
Radioactivity levels are soaring in seawater near the crippled Fukushima Daiichi plant, Japan's nuclear safety agency said Saturday, two weeks after the nuclear power plant was hit by a massive earthquake and tsunami.

Even as engineers tried to pump puddles of radioactive water from the power plant 150 miles north of Tokyo, the nuclear safety agency said tests Friday showed radioactive iodine had spiked 1,250 times higher than normal in the seawater just offshore from the plant.

Officials said iodine 131 levels in seawater 19 miles from the coastal nuclear complex were within acceptable limits established by regulations and the contamination posed little risk to aquatic life.
"Ocean currents will disperse radiation particles and so it will be very diluted by the time it gets consumed by fish and seaweed," said Hidehiko Nishiyama, a senior official from Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency.

Despite that reassurance, the disclosure may well heighten international concern over Japanese seafood exports. Several countries have already banned milk and produce from areas around the Fukushima Daiichi plant, while others have been monitoring Japanese seafood.

The prolonged efforts to prevent a catastrophic meltdown at the plant have also intensified concerns around the world about nuclear power. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said it was time to reassess the international atomic safety regime.

Radioactive water was found in buildings housing three of the six reactors at the crippled plant. On Thursday, three workers sustained burns at reactor No. 3 after being exposed to radiation levels 10,000 times higher than usually found in a reactor.

The crisis at the nuclear plant has overshadowed the massive relief and recovery effort from the magnitude 9.0 quake and huge tsunami that hit March 11 and left more than 27,500 people dead or missing in northeast Japan.

Chinese Banned Erotic Classic

Chinese Banned Erotic Classic
Chinese ballet company stages banned erotic classic
One of China's most famous ballet directors is testing the very limits of the country's strait-laced attitudes by adapting a notoriously pornographic book for the stage.
The Jin Ping Mei, or 'The Plum in the Golden Vase,' is a classic of Chinese literature from the Ming dynasty that has been banned ever since the 17th century because of its explicit sexual content.

Its first English translator, Clement Egerton, found himself so embarrassed by the 70 or so sex scenes in the book, which run the full gamut of perversion, that he rendered them in Latin.

However, a dance production of the book premiered on Friday to a sell-out crowd in Hong Kong, after Wang Yuanyuan took on the work.

Mrs Wang is a former principal ballerina at the National Ballet of China, and choreographed both the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games and a dance performance at the celebrations to mark the handover of Hong Kong in 1997. She is known as one of the "three queens" of Chinese dance.

However, Mrs Wang admitted that there was little chance of staging her production of the Jin Ping Mei on the Chinese mainland. Instead, she said her work as director of the Beijing Dance Theatre was squarely aimed at foreigners.
"We have not applied for a performance permit in mainland China for a simple reason: I do not like chasing after trouble. Besides, 80 per cent of our shows are now staged abroad. We do not rely on any government sponsorship, so we are not limited," she said.

After its run at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Mrs Wang hinted that the production could travel to the UK in October, after an invitation from the Sadler's Wells Theatre in London to perform.

"We have not yet decided whether we will stage this work or another one," she said.

Mrs Wang said ballet was perfectly suited to express the richness of the Jin Ping Mei, including its sex scenes, but that the production was in no way pornographic.

"This is art," she said. "The audience will see no striptease or nudity, but we did translate it all into dance. This work is different because it is not a love story, but it is about passion and ambition, plotting, scheming and desire."

One challenge, however, was overcoming the shyness of her performers.

"Our company has dancers aged from 18 to 28. Some of these young girls and boys have not had much life experience, and they were evidently embarrassed playing out the sex scenes. They just had to deal with it," she said.

Despite its ban, the Jin Ping Mei is one of China's most popular works of literature, a sprawling tale of intrigue and murder that is widely regarded as one of the country's five greatest classics.

Lindsay Lohan rejects plea deal
Lindsay Lohan arrived at court about 35 minutes late Thursday morning. Inside the courtroom, Judge Keith Schwartz said the case is set to move toward trial.
Lohan rejected a plea deal. A pre-trial hearing is set for April 22 with a different judge. E! Online reports that the plea deal contained an offer of six months in county jail for a guilty from Lohan.

The maximum sentence in California Lohan could face is three years in state prison. If Lohan agrees to plead guilty or no contest by March 25, Schwartz will take the April 22 court date off the calendar.

Lohan, 24, has been accused of stealing a $2500 necklace from jewelry store Kamofie & Co. She pleaded not guilty to felony grand theft on Feb. 9.

At one point, Schwartz spoke sharply to the people appearing before him for leaking so much information to the press. Stories about the plea deal have popped up online for several days. He did not admonish Lohan for being late.

Alyse Lahti Johnston Should Prepare For Questions About Boyfriend Tiger Woods

I am sure she weighed the pros and cons before heading into this thing. There is no way she is not prepared for what is in store. Right?

I am of course talking about Alyse Lahti Johnston. She would be the new girlfriend of golf legend Tiger Woods. She is also about to undergo the scrutiny of the American media.

They will be at her house, her gym and work. They will follow her everywhere. That is what paparazzi do. They badger you until they get bored, or you do something to cause another headline. I hope she is prepared.

The media blitz that has been the focal point of Tiger Woods life is about to spill over onto this young 22-year old woman. Dating Tiger Woods is not like dating another man. You are taking on a logo, a franchise and a scandal.

They will want to know how she feels about his affairs. There will be questions about their relationship. She might even be asked inane questions about Tiger's swing.

There is no hiding from it. It is best to come out and embrace every last second of it. You will either look good or bad in the spotlight. There is no running from it though. Tiger Woods would do well to help matters.

He does not owe a disclosure to the media about this relationship. However, it will go a long way to helping his transition. It would also take the heat of Johnston who is sure to be asked questions that Tiger just won't answer.

Ah, I miss the days when the biggest story in golf was how good Tiger Woods was. We have fallen a long ways haven't we?

The Story Behind Johnny Cash's Infamous Middle Finger Photo
(Gibson) Before his death in March 2010, photographer Jim Marshall revealed the truth behind the infamous picture of Johnny Cash giving the middle finger to the camera. Marshall shot the photo during Cash's 1969 performance at San Quentin Prison.

According to the San Francisco Art Exchange, it was Marshall who prompted Cash to flip him the bird. "I said, 'John, let's do a shot for the warden,'" and the country legend made the gesture. Marshall said that the shot is, "probably the most ripped-off photograph in the history of the world."

Marshall's quotes were made public, according to NME.com, because of the new book, Pocket Cash, which collects the photographer's pictures of Johnny. A collection of the photos is also being exhibited at London's SNAP galleries.

Newman's early tribute to Taylor

Paul Newman Called Elizabeth Taylor 'a Helluva Actress'

Superstar to superstar. To Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor was "a functioning voluptuary … a courageous survivor, a helluva actress and someone I am extremely proud to know."

Even in the sanitized 1958 MGM version of Tennessee Williams's potent drama in which they costarred, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof – with the sultry Newman as the drunkard ex-athlete Brick and an indelible Taylor as his neglected wife, Maggie the Cat – the two sent audiences' pulses racing. But they were more than simply sex symbols. Both proved themselves Academy Award-level actors and world-class humanitarians.

Now, sadly, they are both gone. Newman died at age 83, in 2008, and Taylor, at 79, early Wednesday morning.

Fortunately, their performances remain – as does a tribute Newman paid Taylor on behalf of Turner Classic Movies.

"What can you say about a legend?" Newman muses at the beginning of the four-minute video love letter. Acknowledging but not dwelling upon her remarkable violent eyes or stunning beauty, Newman instead concentrates on her screen presence, "her volatility, her sense of truth."

"On the screen," he said, "her very presence seemed to radiate charm."

And while "she practically grew up in front of the camera," Newman noted, "her life has not been an easy or a private one, but a series of tribulations, serious illnesses, senseless tragedy and lost love."

Left a widow during the making of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof when the private plane carrying her husband, impresario Mike Todd, crashed in New Mexico, Taylor continued acting as Maggie, finding the work therapeutic. "I was overwhelmed with her professionalism," Newman said.

"One thing for sure: She is not afraid to take chances in front of people. I find a lot of actors who reach the top, they become very protective of themselves, and self-indulgent, but not Elizabeth," added Newman. "I was always staggered by her ferocity."

Danica Patrick in wreck
Danica not happy after wreck at Bristol
With 53 laps to go in Saturday’s Nationwide race at Bristol Motor Speedway, Patrick made contact with Ryan Truex. Patrick’s car spun hard into the wall – first the nose, then the rear, leaving her with a destroyed race car.
After getting out of her car, Patrick waited for the cars to come back around. When they did, Patrick walked onto the track, located Truex and spread her arms apart as if to say, “What gives?”

“It felt like to me – I came out of the corner I was just running down the straight and it felt like he came off the wall,” said Patrick, who was running 17th at the time, two laps down. “I don’t I know if he had a tank-slap off the wall, like he was pushing up and then it snapped on him and he came off. I don’t know. I don’t know if I may be giving him the benefit of the doubt right there.”

Upon first look it didn’t appear as though Truex did anything wrong. It looked liked Patrick got loose, slipped up the track and into Truex’s rear bumper. But the head-on replay does show Truex turning slightly into Patrick’s lane.

“It was my fault. I guess that’s just racing at Bristol,” Truex said. “We were racing there and I just came off the corner, got loose, and as I was saving it just came down the hill and got into her. My fault. I mean, I’m sorry. I didn’t want for that to happen. I don’t know if she thinks I did it on purpose. I guess she’s just mad because she was running good. It was an accident. I apologize.”

Regardless of fault, it was a tough way for Patrick to end this portion of her Nationwide schedule. She’d finished in the top 20 in her first three races, including a career-best fourth-place run two weeks ago at Las Vegas.

She ended up 33rd at Bristol.

Now, she heads back to her day job in IndyCar. Patrick’s next Nationwide race is June 4 at Chicagoland Speedway.

“I’m just disappointed,” she said. “I felt like this was a pretty decent run at Bristol for the first time. … It’s disappointing to leave for a couple of months with this kind of a thing.”

Kyle Busch won the race, his fourth straight win at Bristol across both the Nationwide and Cup series.

Tiger Woods launches app
He's definitely got swing: Tiger Woods launches $9.99 iPhone app to help amateur golfers improve their game
He may have dropped to fifth in the world, but he still knows a thing or two about a golf swing.

And now amateur players can access Tiger Woods's expertise straight from the course with a new iPhone app.

The former world number one has launched an application called Tiger Woods: My Swing to give fans mobile lessons in his game.

The $9.99 app, released today, uses video technology to allow players to compare their swing to Woods's.

But it is not yet clear which version of his famed technique they'll see, as Woods is going through his fourth swing change since he turned professional 15 years ago.

He will donate all proceeds from the application to the Tiger Woods Foundation, which promotes youth education.

Woods will act as a virtual teacher on the new app, which is available for the iPhone and the iPod touch from the iTunes store.

Golfers can use the app to record a video of their swing, then analyse it side by side with his.

Woods said he uses the same video technology to improve his game by seeing how his swing changes.

Users will be able to upload their videos to the internet so they can compare swings with their friends and analyse their progress over time.

Woods said: 'Everything about this app is based on how I practise. I've rebuilt my swing a number of times over the years and use this technology to gauge my development and help with my swing transitions.

'I'm excited that through this app I can take this technology on the road with me and that golfers around the world can now do the same to improve their game.'

The app also includes personalised videos from Woods, which answer questions from fans.

He said: 'I'm thrilled that in addition to providing fans with a fun way to analyse their golf game, this app will benefit the college access programs of my Foundation.

'From the funds raised we can continue to give many more young people a shot at college.'

Dez Bryant Kicked Out Of Shopping Mall: Cowboys Player Ejected Over Sagging Pants
Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant was ejected from an upscale Dallas shopping mall after a dispute over the sagging pants worn by him and some companions.

A Tuesday police statement says officers working off-duty Saturday as security at NorthPark Center encountered Bryant and three companions wearing the drooping pants.

According to the statement, when the officers asked the four to pull up their trousers, Bryant launched into a profanity-laced tirade that prompted the officers to escort the four from the mall.

Police say Bryant refused to leave, however, until his "representative" could arrive and he parked in a fire lane until a friend arrived and persuaded him to leave.

No charge was filed. Bryant's agent, Eugene Parker, declined to comment. The Dallas Cowboys did not respond to requests for comment.

Howard Stern sues employer
Howard Stern Sues His Own Employer, SiriusXM
Radio shock jock Howard Stern, also known as the King of All Media, is suing SirusXM radio for unpaid bonuses in a new lawuit filed in New York City today.

The suit alleges that SiriusXM owes Howard Stern for attracting new subscribers. However, SiriusXM claims that once they merged with XM back in 2008, that new subscribers acquired did not count toward his incentives. Howard believes that the merge between Sirius and XM was made possible simply because he was linked with Sirius in the first place.

Stern alleges the subscriber estimates on which his stock bonuses were to be based ranged from 3.7 million in 2006 to 12.1 million in 2010. According to Stern, he actually blew those estimates out of the water and Sirius today has a subscriber base of more than 20 million subscribers.

So the battle begins.

Howard Stern listeners are likely to hear him rant about the situation, Howard has never been known to keep quiet about things. This wouldn’t exactly be the first time this has happened. When Stern worked for WXRK he would often rant about CBS until his eventual departure in 2005.

Did Paris Hilton say 'I can't stand black guys' in new book? [Updated]

Paris Hilton has a new reality show this summer on Oxygen titled "The World According To Paris" and focusing on her daily whirlwind life. But Hilton sparks controversy, and a new book may turn the heat up.

"Everyone Loves You When You're Dead: Journeys Into Fame and Madness" by pop culture journalist Neil Strauss contains an encounter where Strauss quotes the heiresss as saying, "I can't stand black guys. I would never touch one. It's gross."

Portions of the interview, which Strauss said took place in 1999 when he was partying with Hilton, have been posted on several websites, including Gawker and LA Weekly.

Strauss said he was discussing several subjects with Hilton when she started talking about a guy she had been out with the previous evening.

Pointing to an unnamed actor in "Saving Private Ryan," Hilton was quoted as saying, "We were making out, but then we went somewhere where it was bright and I saw that he was black and made an excuse and left. I can't stand black guys. I would never touch one. It's gross."

When Strauss asked Hilton, "How black does a guy have to be?" he quotes her response, "One percent is enough for me."

Executives for Oxygen, which is owned by NBC-Universal, and representatives for Hilton were not immediately available for comment.

Elizabeth Taylor dies at 79

Elizabeth Taylor dies at 79
Screen legend Elizabeth Taylor, the violet-eyed film goddess whose sultry screen life was often upstaged by her stormy personal life, died Wednesday at age 79.

She died of congestive heart failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she had been hospitalized for about six weeks, publicist Sally Morrison said.

"All her children were with her," Morrison said.

Taylor had extraordinary grace, fame and wealth, and won three Oscars, including a special one for her humanitarian work. But she was tortured by ill health, failed romances and personal tragedy.

"I think I'm becoming fatalistic," she said in 1989. "Too much has happened in my life for me not to be fatalistic."

Her eight marriages — including two to actor Richard Burton — and a lifelong battle with substance abuse, physical ailments and overeating made Taylor as popular in supermarket tabloids as in classic film festivals.

Photos: In Memoriam: Elizabeth Taylor

Taylor disclosed in November 2004 that she had congestive heart failure. But she still periodically dismissed reports that she was at death's door, saying she used a wheelchair only because of chronic back problems that began at age 12 when she fell from a horse.

"Oh, come on, do I look like I'm dying?" she said in May 2006 in a rare television interview on CNN's "Larry King Live." "Do I look like or sound like I have Alzheimer's?" Tabloids report such things "because they have nothing else dirty to write about anybody else," she said.

When she turned 75 the following year, she was asked about the secret to her longevity and quipped: "Hangin' in."

The London-born actress was a star at age 12, a bride and a divorcee at 18, a screen goddess at 19 and a widow at 26.

She appeared in more than 50 films, and won Oscars for her performances in "Butterfield 8" (1960) and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (1966), in which she starred opposite Burton.

In later years, she was a spokeswoman for several causes, most notably AIDS research. Her work gained her a special Oscar, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, in 1993.

As she accepted it, she told a worldwide television audience: "I call upon you to draw from the depths of your being — to prove that we are a human race, to prove that our love outweighs our need to hate, that our compassion is more compelling than our need to blame."

She accepted her many health problems with a stoic attitude.

"My body's a real mess," Taylor told W magazine in 2004. "If you look at it in the mirror, it's just completely convex and concave."

Singer Loleatta Holloway dies

Soul singer Loleatta Holloway dies aged 64
American soul icon Loleatta Holloway, best known for her 1980 hit "Love Sensation," has died at the age of 64, her manager confirmed.

Chicago-born Holloway had been battling a short period of ill health and died from heart failure late Monday, her manager Ron Richardson told music website spinningsoul.com.

Holloway, who was also known for disco song "Hit and Run," successfully sued UK dance act Blackbox for a share of royalties from the group's 1989 number one single "Ride On Time," which sampled "Love Sensation" without credit.

Her work has also been sampled by Whitney Houston, for the star's 2009 hit "Million-Dollar Bill," and by US singer-turned actor Mark Wahlberg for his 1991 number one "Good Vibrations," with Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.

Twitter tributes for the singer poured in Tuesday from fans and celebrities, including DJs Giles Petersen and Boy George.

LeAnn Rimes Has Counseling With Fiance's Ex Brandi Glanville
LeAnn Rimes has had counseling with her fiance's ex-wife. The 28-year-old singer/actress, who announced last month she is planning to marry Eddie Cibrian, attended therapy sessions with Brandi Glanville prior to her engagement, but the make-up artist admits the meetings "did not go well".
Brandi, who has two sons, Mason, seven, and Jake, three, with Eddie, revealed: "I did try some counseling with LeAnn, but it did not go so well for one reason or another. At times I feel like they are blaming me, although I don't really quite know why, but I understand it is a process and that our sons have to come first."

Brandi and Eddie, 37, were married for eight years before they split in July 2009 after he had an affair with 28-year-old LeAnn, who was wed to Dean Sheremet at the time, during filming of their 2008 TV movie 'Northern Lights'. She admits she is still struggling to establish a good relationship with her ex-husband but is hopeful they can one day resolve their problems, though she refused to sign a confidentiality agreement he had requested.

She told website RadarOnline.com: "There is still a lot of animosity but hopefully, one day, we can move through that and get to a better place. Divorce is very tough but going through it in public makes it really hard. Eddie and LeAnn wanted me to sign a confidentiality agreement but I refused to do that as I never did anything wrong."

"I have great friends and family and I have managed to draw strength from that plus the fact that my boys always keep me busy too. We will see in time how everything pans out but just now, it's not the best."

LeAnn's admission to an affair with Eddie was unpopular with many of her fans, but her divorce was finalized in June and ex-husband Dean has since got engaged again.

Its Kick Butts Day

16th annual Kick Butts Day Wednesday

The 16th annual Kick Butts Day is scheduled for Wednesday. Coordinated by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism that empowers youth to speak up and take action against tobacco use at more than 1,000 events from coast to coast.

To celebrate Kick Butts Day students from the NOT (Not on Tobacco) Stop Smoking Group at the Academic and Career Education Academy of Midland will be distributing petitions and obtaining signatures for the Knock Tobacco Out of the Park campaign. Use of smokeless tobacco is gaining in popularity with the passage of smokefree air laws in most states. More needs to be done to reduce the major league ball players from setting a bad example to young people. The petitions will be sent to major league officials requesting that they ban all tobacco use on the field and in the dugout.

Tobacco use continues to be the number one cause of preventable death in Michigan, killing more than 14,000 Michigan residents each year. More than 18,000 Michigan kids become smokers each year

A community scan will also be conducted on Kick Butts Day in Midland County to determine how available these new tobacco and non-tobacco nicotine products are locally and how they're being sold and marketed in various venues within the community.

According to Susan Dusseau, Coordinator of the Midland County Tobacco Reduction Coalition, "The most challenging aspect of these new products is their appeal to young people. The packaging, advertising, and flavors of these products are very difficult to distinguish from candy. Kids can begin a lifetime of addiction to nicotine with these products, and be at risk for all of the health issues associated with tobacco use. Kick Butts Day is a great time to raise awareness among parents and kids that these products are not a safe alternative to smoking cigarettes."
