BlackBerry services collapse in three continents
BlackBerry services collapse in three continents. Blackberry users in Africa, Europe and Asia have been cut off due to a fault at RIM, the Canada-based manufacturer of the popular device, the Telegraph reported on its website.

Millions of users were unable to connect to web services, use instant messaging or send e-mails.

A spokesman from RIM was not available for comment.

T-Mobile UK tweeted, “There is an issue with Blackberry services at present. RIM are investigating this at present," on its official Twitter account.

Abercrombie Padded Bikini Tops
Abercrombie & Fitch Sparks Outcry With Padded Bikini Tops for 8-Year-Olds
Swimsuit season is looming, and stores are galore with itty bitty bikinis.

But shockingly, one of America’s largest clothing retail chains, Abercrombie & Fitch, is marketing padded bikini tops to girls as young as eight.

Included in the current spring line for Abercrombie Kids (a division of the fashion company specifically dedicated to 8-14 year olds) is the “Ashley” Push-Up Triangle – a triangular-shaped bikini top which comes complete with thick padding for breast enhancement.

Moms and child development experts are aghast over the garment and the damage it could potentially do to young girls in making them feel inadequate with their pre-adolsecent bodies.

“This is appalling! If a parent buys a padded bikini for an eight year old, children's services should be called! The sexualization of teens is bad enough and now this trend is trickling down to our babies,” parenting expert Dr. Janet Rose told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column. “If we continue to try to make our children value 'sexy' I shudder to think what damage we are doing to their future self-concepts and adult values. In the long run, I fear we are creating girls who will suffer from low self-esteem and all the issues that go along with that.”

A rep for Abercrombie & Fitch was not immediately available for comment.

Los Angeles-based psychologist, Dr. Nancy Irwin, said wearing a chest-boosting bikini top at such a young age can pave the way for sexual promiscuity.

“Wearing a padded bra at that age when unnecessary is encouraging sexual precociousness, a dangerous muscle to flex for the girl as well as for peers and predators,” she explained.

Human Behavior expert Patrick Wanis PhD concurred that the padded tops are both disturbing and dangerous.

“Are we sexualizing young girls to get the attention of men or to encourage women to use their daughters to compensate for their own lack of sexual appeal by living vicariously through their daughter?" Wanis asked. "Is this the extreme extension of the beauty-pageant mother who now seeks to make up for what she can never be?”

Other experts say the onus is on parents, not the fashion industry, over what young children wear.

“It doesn't matter much, these days, as to what the comments are surrounding what the fashion industry has decided our teeny-bopper sex tantalizers should adorn themselves in. I'm slapping the blame on moms for not seeing any further than their own breast implants when it comes to purchasing push-uppers for girls that don't, as yet, actually have any breasts,” said Shirlee Smith, CEO/Founder of “Talk About Parenting With Shirlee Smith.” “Who is paying for this sexy- kiddie marketing? Mom in the short run, sex object girls in the long run.”

Tina Fey Memoir

Tina Fey’s new memoir recounts days at Second City

Tina Fey’s forthcoming comedic memoir Bossypants (out April 5) features plenty of material from the Second City alum’s days in “the Windy City, full of meat.” Here, she writes about an early job interview — for a law office receptionist position — gone awry.
“I wore the electric blue polyester Hillary Clinton power suit that my roommate and I shared for such occasions. The hourlong train ride and scramble to find the exact address had made me late, and by the time I got to the interview, I was sweating my roommate’s BO out of the suit.
“The stench of every drink and every cigarette she’d had the last time she wore it filled the high-end office in which I interviewed. Between the suit, its booze cloud and my thick virgin eyebrows, I was deemed unfit to answer phones in plain view. I was turning out to be college-educated and unemployable in even the most basic way.”

Freida Pinto Dev Patel Romance is a Challenge

FREIDA Pinto admits her relationship with Dev Patel is a “challenge”.
The actress -– who has been dating the British star since they met on the set of Slumdog Millionaire — admits they are both focused on their careers, which means they spend a lot of time apart, but she insists the pair try not to let it disrupt their romance too much.
“I’m still together with Dev. It’s a challenge to meet mid-way because I live in Bombay,” she said.
“But at the same time, we both respect and support each other. We know this is our work. And we know that we’ve got to concentrate and focus on that as well, just as much as we concentrate and focus on the relationship.”
Though Freida is focused on her work, the actress’ friends have begged her to slow down because they fear her busy schedule is taking its toll on her health.

“I’ve been sick recently,” she said. “Overwork. My body was just screaming and telling me, ‘Stop what you’re doing for a bit.’ Recently a friend said, ‘Freida, you have to learn the art of saying, ‘No.’”

Air traffic controller caught sleeping

Air traffic controller caught sleeping
Aviation experts on alert after tower supervisor dozes off
WASHINGTON — Aviation and safety experts are on alert after an air traffic control tower supervisor reportedly fell asleep at the switch early Wednesday at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., leaving two commercial jets to land without gaining clearance.

The controller, along with other Federal Aviation Administration officials at Reagan National, was interviewed by the National Transportation Safety Board, NBC News has learned. The controller — a 20-year-veteran, 17 of those years at Reagan — had been working his fourth consecutive overnight shift (10 p.m. to 6 a.m.)

“What’s really shocking about this is that they had only one person in that tower," aviation lawyer and safety expert Mike Pangia told NBC News. “It’s a human thing to be indisposed for one reason or another."

"I think they need to look into the supervisory staff and those people who are responsible for manning the tower in such an important area such as Reagan Airport, which is a stone’s throw away from the Pentagon, from the Capitol Building and everything else in Washington, D.C. … To have just one controller on duty, even when the traffic is light, is absurd," Pangia said.

FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt vowed "to get to the bottom of this situation."

"As a former airline pilot, I am personally outraged that this controller did not meet his responsibility to help land these two airplanes," Babbitt said.

The supervisor, who wasn't named, has been suspended from operational duties.

Two is better than one
On Wednesday, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood LaHood directed FAA to launch a nationwide study of airport tower staffing. He also directed that at least two controllers be on duty at night at Reagan, which is located just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., in northern Virginia.

"It is not acceptable to have just one controller in the tower managing air traffic in this critical air space," LaHood said.

The incident comes nearly five years after a fatal crash in Kentucky in which a controller was working alone. Accident investigators said that controller was most likely suffering from fatigue, although they placed responsibility for the crash that took 49 lives on the pilots.
The head of the union that represents air traffic controllers praised LaHood's actions, saying changes in staffing are needed.

"One-person shifts are unsafe. Period," Paul Rinaldi, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, said in a statement Thursday. He said the union has long been concerned about single controller shifts, citing a 2006 air crash in Lexington, Ky., in which a Comair regional airliner attempted a takeoff at night from the wrong runway. A single air traffic controller was on duty in the airport tower at the time.

"The administration inherited an unsafe policy of staffing to budget instead of putting safety first," Rinaldi said. "We fully support the administration's aggressive actions to change this policy."

In this week's incident, the pilots of the two planes — American Airlines flight 1012, a Boeing 737 with 91 passengers and six crew members on board, and United Airlines flight 628T, an Airbus A320 with 63 passengers and five crew members — were unable to raise a controller at Reagan as they approached the airport.

They were, however, in contact with controllers at a regional FAA facility about 40 miles away in Warrenton, Va. Those controllers tried repeatedly to contact the tower by phone, but their calls went unanswered, said National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Peter Knudson.

The issue is likely to land in Congress' lap next week when the House is expected take up a Republican-drafted bill that would cut $4 billion over four years from the FAA. The agency says it needs more money, not less.

'We're not going to be able to land'
John Schriffen, a passenger on the American Airlines flight from Miami and a reporter for NBC affiliate WNRC in Washington, D.C., said that everything appeared to be going as planned as the flight approached Reagan National.

“All of a sudden, we started pulling back up and the engine starts kicking back into gear. A few minutes after that, the pilot gets over the loudspeaker and says, ‘I’m sorry folks, we’re not going to be able to land. We can’t get any contact with anyone at air traffic control. We’re going to have to circle the airport until we can get a response from them.' ”

Schriffen said the plane circled the airport for 10 or 15 minutes and then landed.

“The pilot never came out and made another announcement, the flight attendants didn’t say anything — we were escorted off the plane, and that was it," he said.

For many years, air traffic at Reagan was severely restricted between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. to limit noise in surrounding communities, noted Bill Voss, president of the Flight Safety Foundation, an industry-funded group that promotes aviation safety. Today there is more air traffic at night because jets are quieter, but there are still so few landings after midnight that it may be reasonable to have only one controller on duty, he said.
"It's not outrageous for the agency to avoid putting a second six-figure employee into a tower where they may only work a dozen airplanes in a shift," said Voss, a former air traffic controller.

Regional air traffic facilities handle aircraft within roughly a 50-mile radius of an airport, but landings, takeoffs and planes within about three miles of an airport are handled by controllers in the airport tower.

Fatigue factor
There was probably little safety risk in Washington since the pilots would have used a radio frequency for the airport tower to advise nearby aircraft of their intention to land and to make sure that no other planes also intended to land at that time, aviation safety experts said. At that time of night, air traffic would have been light, they said.

Also, controllers at the regional facility, using radar, would have been able to advise the pilots of other nearby planes, experts said.

The primary risk would have been if there was equipment on the runway when the planes landed, they said.

But the incident raises serious questions about controller fatigue, a longstanding safety concern, said John Goglia, a former NTSB board member.

Goglia said shifts must be scheduled to ensure controllers can get enough rest.

"It's worse when nothing is going on," he said. "When it's busy, you have to stay engaged. When it's quiet, all they have to be is a little bit tired and they'll fall asleep."

Pangia, the aviation lawyer, agrees.

“The job at National, because of the low traffic, becomes very, very fatiguing … because there is no activity … and human beings, being what we are, can be indisposed for one reason or another, and that’s why it’s so important to have another person on.

“Planes can be flown with one pilot, but we have two pilots onboard because we’re human beings."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

American Idol does Motown

'American Idol' Top 11 Does Motown Proud -- So Who Deserves to Go Home?

Wednesday evening's "American Idol" may have exhibited the best all-around night of performances in the show's 10-year history. Although some contestants stood out, there truly was not a bad performance in the 11 offerings for "Motown Week." That said, one of them will be voted off the show -- unless the judges decide to use their one and only "Save" of the season, which, given the quality of performances, wouldn't be a terrible idea -- or would it?

The Top 11, all of whom seemed to be over the bout of viruses that had overtaken them the week before, took on the Motown sound with surprising results. Even Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery, whose country music roots show each week, were able to give the signature Motown sound a unique twist.

The most disappointing performance may have been Stefano Langone's somewhat over-the-top version of Lionel Richie's "Hello." Although sung well, he did not seem to have an emotional connection to the song -- and the judges noticed, calling him on it.

Thia Megia, the youngest performer still alive in Season 10, performed Martha and the Vandellas' "Heat Wave." Again, although sung well, there was a presentation problem. No matter what she sings, Megia unfortunately appears "pageanty" -- like she's some pageant performer offering her talent routine.

The standouts from the weeks before remained the standouts of Motown Week. Casey Abrams worked the audience with his controlled growl on Marvin Gaye's "Heard It Through The Grapevine." Jacob Lusk soared with Marvin Gaye's "You're All I Need to Get By," prompting judge Steven Tyler to rush the stage and hug the finalist (followed by Lusk's grandmother and half of the front row of the studio audience). Pia Toscano and James Durbin mesmerized (again) with Stevie Wonder songs and Lauren Alaina simply nailed The Supremes' "You Keep Me Hanging On."

Besides Naima Adedapo's Africanized version of the classic "Dancing In The Streets," Paul McDonald's version of The Miracles' "Tracks Of My Tears" was possibly the most unique, putting a folksy twist to the tune. But then there was Scotty McCreery's version of Stevie Wonder's "For Once In My Life," which was given a Glen Campbell-esque arrangement, something that Tyler picked up on. (An aside: Does McCreery at times resemble Alfred E. Newman, the iconic cover mascot for "Mad" magazine?).

Although it seems that none of the contestants really deserve to be eliminated this week -- a very rare occurrence (nay, something that has never occurred in the history of "American Idol"). Could this be the cue for the judges to use their "Save"? Still, given the show's penchant for using the Save and then eliminating two contestants the following week, that decision might cause problems with the "American Idol" live tour that showcases the Top 10. Of course, they could make an exception and take 11 contestants on the road...

The results show will build the Top 10 live on Thursday evening, March 24. Season 3 alum Jennifer Hudson returns to perform her latest single. Country hitmakers Sugarland will also perform.

Obama elementary school to close

The Barack H. Obama Elementary School in Asbury Park, New Jersey will close its doors July 1st because of low academic achievement and declining enrollment in the district's schools, according to a release from the Asbury Park State Fiscal Monitor's office.

Students at the elementary school, named last year for the president, will attend two other local schools beginning next fall, and School Superintendent Dr. Denise Lowe said the configuration will help improve academic achievement.

"Change is never easy but the district is at a pivotal point where difficult decisions must be made. The consequences of idleness are far greater than the improvisation that is now necessary," Lowe said in a statement Thursday. "While my preference was to restructure the district's schools based on the Pre-K – 3rd grade reform model, I am committed to leading our schools to greater academic achievement no matter the course."

The decision, first reported by the Asbury Park Press, comes after the Asbury Park Board of Education failed to support a plan Lowe proposed to reconfigure elementary grades and keep the Obama school open.

The site will eventually house administrative offices and another school that will relocate at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year.

Alyse Lahti Johnston Should Prepare For Questions About Boyfriend Tiger Woods

I am sure she weighed the pros and cons before heading into this thing. There is no way she is not prepared for what is in store. Right?

I am of course talking about Alyse Lahti Johnston. She would be the new girlfriend of golf legend Tiger Woods. She is also about to undergo the scrutiny of the American media.

They will be at her house, her gym and work. They will follow her everywhere. That is what paparazzi do. They badger you until they get bored, or you do something to cause another headline. I hope she is prepared.

The media blitz that has been the focal point of Tiger Woods life is about to spill over onto this young 22-year old woman. Dating Tiger Woods is not like dating another man. You are taking on a logo, a franchise and a scandal.

They will want to know how she feels about his affairs. There will be questions about their relationship. She might even be asked inane questions about Tiger's swing.

There is no hiding from it. It is best to come out and embrace every last second of it. You will either look good or bad in the spotlight. There is no running from it though. Tiger Woods would do well to help matters.

He does not owe a disclosure to the media about this relationship. However, it will go a long way to helping his transition. It would also take the heat of Johnston who is sure to be asked questions that Tiger just won't answer.

Ah, I miss the days when the biggest story in golf was how good Tiger Woods was. We have fallen a long ways haven't we?

Whoopi Goldberg Smoked Weed Before Giving Oscar Speech

On Thursday, a viral video hit the internet that shows comedian, actress, and TV personality Whoopi Goldberg admitting that she smoked marijuana before giving her Oscar acceptance speech back in 1991.

In the video, Golderg is seen and heard saying, "Smoking cigarettes and pot every now and then are my habits. And I thought, 'I've got to relax.' So I smoked this wonderful joint that was the last of my home grown.

"When he [presenter Denzel Washington] said my name and I popped up, I thought, 'Oh [expletive]...okay, up the stairs ... around to the podium … there's millions of people, pick up the statue, get the statue."

Goldberg also explains in the video that her mother could tell that she was high in the video because of her "glistening eyes."

Goldberg won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1991 for her role in the hit movie Ghost, which also starred Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze. The video clip is from 1992, during a voice-over session for the movie The Pagemaster.

The Story Behind Johnny Cash's Infamous Middle Finger Photo
(Gibson) Before his death in March 2010, photographer Jim Marshall revealed the truth behind the infamous picture of Johnny Cash giving the middle finger to the camera. Marshall shot the photo during Cash's 1969 performance at San Quentin Prison.

According to the San Francisco Art Exchange, it was Marshall who prompted Cash to flip him the bird. "I said, 'John, let's do a shot for the warden,'" and the country legend made the gesture. Marshall said that the shot is, "probably the most ripped-off photograph in the history of the world."

Marshall's quotes were made public, according to NME.com, because of the new book, Pocket Cash, which collects the photographer's pictures of Johnny. A collection of the photos is also being exhibited at London's SNAP galleries.

Newman's early tribute to Taylor

Paul Newman Called Elizabeth Taylor 'a Helluva Actress'

Superstar to superstar. To Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor was "a functioning voluptuary … a courageous survivor, a helluva actress and someone I am extremely proud to know."

Even in the sanitized 1958 MGM version of Tennessee Williams's potent drama in which they costarred, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof – with the sultry Newman as the drunkard ex-athlete Brick and an indelible Taylor as his neglected wife, Maggie the Cat – the two sent audiences' pulses racing. But they were more than simply sex symbols. Both proved themselves Academy Award-level actors and world-class humanitarians.

Now, sadly, they are both gone. Newman died at age 83, in 2008, and Taylor, at 79, early Wednesday morning.

Fortunately, their performances remain – as does a tribute Newman paid Taylor on behalf of Turner Classic Movies.

"What can you say about a legend?" Newman muses at the beginning of the four-minute video love letter. Acknowledging but not dwelling upon her remarkable violent eyes or stunning beauty, Newman instead concentrates on her screen presence, "her volatility, her sense of truth."

"On the screen," he said, "her very presence seemed to radiate charm."

And while "she practically grew up in front of the camera," Newman noted, "her life has not been an easy or a private one, but a series of tribulations, serious illnesses, senseless tragedy and lost love."

Left a widow during the making of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof when the private plane carrying her husband, impresario Mike Todd, crashed in New Mexico, Taylor continued acting as Maggie, finding the work therapeutic. "I was overwhelmed with her professionalism," Newman said.

"One thing for sure: She is not afraid to take chances in front of people. I find a lot of actors who reach the top, they become very protective of themselves, and self-indulgent, but not Elizabeth," added Newman. "I was always staggered by her ferocity."

Westboro Church to protest star's funeral
Westboro Church Plans Protest Of Funeral For Pa. Children
HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Westboro Baptist Church, the controversial group that just won a free speech Supreme Court case, said it plans to protest at a funeral for seven Pennsylvania children who died in a fire Tuesday (March 8) night.

"I'm baffled that they would choose this," said Perry County District Attorney Charles F. Chenot III. "This is a family that's obviously apparently Christian in their beliefs and certainly shouldn't conflict with the beliefs of the Westboro Baptist Church."

Westboro says the children's deaths are linked to the recent Supreme Court decision, in which a father sued the church after it protested his slain Marine son's funeral in 2008.

"The bottom line is that they can't interfere with the funeral itself," Chenot said of the service set for March 15.

The church has threatened to picket funerals in Perry County before, Chenot said. They did not show up though, and Chenot said he hopes that this is an empty threat.

"I suspect this is just to get attention," he said. "That's the only reason I can think they would want to attend this funeral."

A police presence will be assembled, just in case. "Will there be some vigilante justice? I hope not," Chenot said. "But I think the potential is there."

Elizabeth Taylor dies at 79

Elizabeth Taylor dies at 79
Screen legend Elizabeth Taylor, the violet-eyed film goddess whose sultry screen life was often upstaged by her stormy personal life, died Wednesday at age 79.

She died of congestive heart failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she had been hospitalized for about six weeks, publicist Sally Morrison said.

"All her children were with her," Morrison said.

Taylor had extraordinary grace, fame and wealth, and won three Oscars, including a special one for her humanitarian work. But she was tortured by ill health, failed romances and personal tragedy.

"I think I'm becoming fatalistic," she said in 1989. "Too much has happened in my life for me not to be fatalistic."

Her eight marriages — including two to actor Richard Burton — and a lifelong battle with substance abuse, physical ailments and overeating made Taylor as popular in supermarket tabloids as in classic film festivals.

Photos: In Memoriam: Elizabeth Taylor

Taylor disclosed in November 2004 that she had congestive heart failure. But she still periodically dismissed reports that she was at death's door, saying she used a wheelchair only because of chronic back problems that began at age 12 when she fell from a horse.

"Oh, come on, do I look like I'm dying?" she said in May 2006 in a rare television interview on CNN's "Larry King Live." "Do I look like or sound like I have Alzheimer's?" Tabloids report such things "because they have nothing else dirty to write about anybody else," she said.

When she turned 75 the following year, she was asked about the secret to her longevity and quipped: "Hangin' in."

The London-born actress was a star at age 12, a bride and a divorcee at 18, a screen goddess at 19 and a widow at 26.

She appeared in more than 50 films, and won Oscars for her performances in "Butterfield 8" (1960) and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (1966), in which she starred opposite Burton.

In later years, she was a spokeswoman for several causes, most notably AIDS research. Her work gained her a special Oscar, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, in 1993.

As she accepted it, she told a worldwide television audience: "I call upon you to draw from the depths of your being — to prove that we are a human race, to prove that our love outweighs our need to hate, that our compassion is more compelling than our need to blame."

She accepted her many health problems with a stoic attitude.

"My body's a real mess," Taylor told W magazine in 2004. "If you look at it in the mirror, it's just completely convex and concave."
